In the beginning, indigenous knowledge systems and communal healing practices defined our experience of wellbeing. British colonization uprooted that and introduced a care system grounded on Western derived systems. Wellbeing became a tool for social control. Today, people are more stressed, more anxious… often with good reason. Yesterday’s history defines today. Mathare Hospital is still mostly considered a lunatic hospital. Might it be possible to emerge from this current moment stronger? Through a unique curation of stories, mixed media, musical performance, and talks, we explore how the history of mental health (yesterday) shapes our current experience of wellbeing (today) and the hope for tomorrow. Join us as we investigate our rich history of mental health treatment and therapies. We will hear from experts in mental health, history, and policy and provide avenues to network and exchange ideas. As we dine, connect, and reflect, we have a unique opportunity to collaborate and contribute to the future of mental health in Kenya.
